The Dream for Our Community (BHS) Save the Date: Students to perform in Jan. 31 tribute to MLK
Several Barrington 220 students and performing groups will participate in a Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, tribute to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The community event is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the Barrington High School auditorium. Many local dignitaries, including WGN TV newsman Robert Jordan, are tentatively scheduled to participate, as well.
Library Sale: Superbowl Toss In Library Activity. Sale of items using "money" earned by how much children have read and shared during library sharing time. Donations and volunteers are always appreciated. Please contact Denise or Kelly Madryzk to get involved.
Bone Marrow Registry & Blood Donation Drive (Langendorf Park) A member of our Station and Barrington community was recently diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a rare condition that substantially limits the body’s ability to produce vital blood cells. This condition draws attention to a national need for blood donations and bone marrow testing and registry. This will help thousands of patients, many of them children, living with leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia and related blood line disorders. As always, our community can take a lead role through compassion and activism.
For many patients, the only cure is to jump-start their bone marrow with a donation from a compatible source. Because a patient can find themselves needing such a therapy on very short notice, LifeSource? maintains a national registry of donors who agree to participate in the compassionate donation of their blood and/or bone marrow. LifeSource? quickly matches a patient with a compatible donor and the donation process begins and a life can be saved.
The LifeSource? testing process, which consists of a simple cheek swab, is quick and painless (less than 10 minutes including paperwork.) LifeSource? is asking for a $25 donation which will help defray the cost of testing (standard testing cost is $100). There is NO cost to donate blood. The family heartily supports any effort to promote a local drive as a testament to the strength and volunteerism that make our community so special and the chance for us to touch lives all over the world.
PLEASE JOIN US IN OUR EFFORTS TO SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY AND HELP ALL PATIENTS WITH BLOOD RELATED ILLNESSES.
LifeSource? has agreed to run 2 testing sessions for us on the dates and times below:
February 8th 2pm – 8pm Langendorf Park District (bone marrow & blood drive)
February 9th 2pm – 8pm South Barrington Club (bone marrow only)
If you are between the ages of 18 and 60, please come out and support all who live with similar blood related conditions. Your participation in the national registry could potentially save a life across the street or across the country. More donors allow for more potential lives to be touched, so please tell everyone you know about this event and encourage them to participate. To register for:
Bone marrow: please send an email to indicating which testing session you will attend, Monday or Tuesday.
Blood: please go to www.lifesource.org and click on the “Existing Donor” or “New Donor” on the right; then follow the instructions to schedule a time. Sponsor code is “A101.”
LifeSource? will have staff present at both sessions to explain the testing and the potential donation process and to answer any questions. For those of you who cannot make either of these sessions, you can also be tested by visiting the LifeSource? facility in either Hoffman Estates (1145 N. Roselle Road) or Lake Zurich (790 S. Rand Road) and telling them you are there to be tested for the Langendorf Drive, or you can go to join.marrow.org/LifeSource (use promo code “LifeSource”) and register online (they will send you a test kit in the mail). BJWC Safetytown2010Registration (Barrington Public Safety Building) Registration begins April 10 for Barrington Junior Women’s Club (BJWC) 2010 Safety Town. During the two-week sessions, June 14-25 and July 12-23, children attend classes Monday through Friday for 2.5 hours each day at The Orchard Church in Barrington (formerly Health World). Two class times offered during each session are 9-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-3 p.m.

Children also review their address and phone number and how to properly use 911 for an emergency.
Children entering kindergarten or first grade who have not previously participated in Safety Town are eligible. The Safety Town enrollment fee for campers is $100. Scholarships are available based on financial need. Students completing sixth, seventh and eighth grade can participate as volunteers.
